What's involved?

A Mummy MOT Physio Appointment with Ellie is a specialised postnatal assessment designed to support new mothers in their recovery after childbirth. This comprehensive check-up focuses on pelvic health, core strength, and overall body function. Here’s what’s typically involved:

Process

Initial Consultation and Health History
Ellie will discuss your birth experience, medical history, and any symptoms or concerns you may have, such as pelvic pain, incontinence, or back discomfort. This conversation helps tailor the assessment to your specific needs.

Postural Assessment
Many women experience changes in posture during and after pregnancy. Ellie will assess your posture to identify any imbalances, tension, or misalignment that may be contributing to discomfort.

Pelvic Floor Muscle Examination
A key focus of the Mummy MOT is the health of your pelvic floor. With your consent, Ellie may perform an internal or external pelvic floor assessment to evaluate muscle tone, strength, and coordination, identifying any signs of weakness, prolapse, or tension.

Abdominal Muscle Check (Diastasis Recti Assessment)
Pregnancy can cause separation of the abdominal muscles (diastasis recti). Ellie will assess the width and depth of any abdominal gap to determine if corrective exercises or other treatments are needed.

Breathing and Core Activation Assessment
Effective breathing techniques and core engagement are essential for postnatal recovery. Ellie will check how well you’re able to engage your core and use your breath to support pelvic floor function, which is important for stability and strength.

Functional Movement Screening
This part involves assessing movements that are part of everyday life, such as bending, lifting, and squatting. Ellie will observe how you perform these movements to identify any compensatory patterns or weaknesses.

Personalised Treatment Plan
Based on the assessment findings, Ellie will create a tailored treatment plan. This may include:
Pelvic floor exercises to strengthen or release tension
Core stability exercises to improve abdominal strength
Postural corrections and ergonomic advice
Education on safe lifting and movement strategies
Recommendations for further physiotherapy sessions or other support as needed.

Home Exercise Programme
You’ll be provided with a personalised exercise programme to continue at home, supporting ongoing recovery and helping you regain strength and confidence in your body.

Benefits

Following childbirth, approximately 50% of women experience weakness in either their abdominal muscles or pelvic floor area, and more than a third encounter complex pelvic pain. These conditions can lead to instability, reduced core strength, and altered weight distribution.

The Mummy MOT is specifically designed to assist women in preventing these distressing and frequently embarrassing symptoms.
