Acupuncture for Musculoskeletal Pain in Norwich

Relieve Pain, Restore Movement, and Support Your Recovery

What is Acupuncture for MSK Pain?

Acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment for musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions, including joint pain, muscle tension, and sports injuries. It involves inserting fine needles into specific points on the body to stimulate healing, reduce pain, and improve movement.

At Ellie Yuen Physiotherapy, we integrate acupuncture with physiotherapy to enhance pain relief and support your recovery.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture helps musculoskeletal pain by:
Stimulating the nervous system – Releases natural painkillers (endorphins) and anti-inflammatory substances.
Reducing muscle tightness – Helps relax deep muscle tension and trigger points.
Improving blood flow – Enhances healing by increasing circulation to affected areas.
Modulating pain perception – Helps the brain process pain signals more effectively.

Evidence suggests that acupuncture can be an effective treatment for chronic pain, osteoarthritis, and musculoskeletal conditions (Vickers et al., 2018).

Who Can Have Acupuncture?
Downwards-arrow

Acupuncture is suitable for most people, but it may not be recommended if you:
⚠ Have a bleeding disorder or take blood thinners.
⚠ Are pregnant (some acupuncture points should be avoided).
⚠ Have a needle phobia or strong aversion to acupuncture.

If you're unsure, we will discuss whether acupuncture is appropriate for you.

Does acupuncture hurt?
Downwards-arrow

Most people experience little to no discomfort. You may feel a mild tingling, warmth, or slight ache, but the needles are very fine and much smaller than those used for injections.

How long does an acupuncture session last?
Downwards-arrow

A session typically lasts 30 to 45 minutes, including assessment, needling, and relaxation time.

How many sessions will I need?
Downwards-arrow

This depends on your condition. Some people feel relief after 1-2 sessions, while others may need 4-6 sessions for lasting results. Your physiotherapist will discuss a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Is acupuncture safe?
Downwards-arrow

Yes. Acupuncture is safe when performed by a trained professional. The needles are sterile, single-use, and very fine, reducing the risk of side effects.

What if I feel sore after treatment?
Downwards-arrow

Some mild soreness or bruising may occur after acupuncture, but this usually resolves within a day or two. Staying hydrated and moving gently can help.

Can I combine acupuncture with other treatments?
Downwards-arrow

Absolutely! Acupuncture works well alongside physiotherapy, massage, exercise therapy, and other MSK treatments. At Ellie Yuen Physio, acupuncture is included as part of the MSK treatment plan. Please specify if you would or would not like acupuncture as part of your session.
